Cup back to two miles 18 Sep 2015

The Wellington Racing Club has today advised that it has requested approval from the NZ Pattern Committee and the Asian Pattern Committee to reinstate the Wellington Cup distance to 3,200 metres for the next running of the race on 23rd January 2016.

This will be wonderful news to many racing enthusiasts who remember the days of Kiwi incredible finish and Castletown’s record breaking three Wellington Cups.

Reinstating the Wellington Cup to the ultimate distance is part of an initiative to support staying races in New Zealand and the Club is working with NZTR on another very exciting initiative that will be announced next week.

WRC President David Butler commented: “NZ has a long and distinguished history as a proud nursery of the world’s best stayers with NZ Bred horses winning 33 of the 55 Melbourne Cups run between 1947 and 2001. We are thrilled to be able to promote the change in distance of our icon event and look forward to being able to announce further initiatives next week.”
